Farmers Daughter block tutorial

Hi all,

This weeks tutorial for the How Far Will You Go? QAL is Block 14 and it is the Farmers Daughter block.

FD title block

This is a 10” finished block and you will only need to make one for the twin size quilt.

Cutting Instructions

Cutting

Background fabric – 8 x 2.5” squares
Grey print – 4 x 2.5” squares
Floral print – 1 x 2.5” square

Background fabric – 4 x 3.25” squares
Pink print 1 – 4 x 3.25” squares
Pink print 2 – 4 x 3.25” squares

Piecing

Making the corner units

Step 1

Step 1 – Using the 3.25” squares, take all the background squares and 2 of the lighter pink squares and draw a line diagonally through the centre. Put the pink squares aside for later.

Step 2

Step 2 – Using all 4 of the background fabric squares and 2 of the dark pink squares and 2 of the light pink squares.
1. place one background fabric and one of the pink fabrics right sides together and using 1/4” seam allowance sew along both sides of the drawn line.
2. Cut down the drawn line with a rotary cutter.
3. Press seams open.
4. Trim squares to 2.5”.

Step  3

You should have 4 HST’s (Half Square Triangle’s) with the dark pink and 4 HST’s with the lighter pink.

Step 4

Step 3 - Using the 2 Light pink squares that have the line drawn on them and the remaining 2 dark pink squares.
1. Place a light pink and dark pink square right sides together and using 1/4” seam allowance sew along both sides of the line.
2. Cut along the drawn line with a rotary cutter.

Step 5

Press the seams open and trim squares to 2.5”.

You should have 4 of these HST’s.

Step 6

Step 4.

Using 4 of the 2.5” background fabric squares and the HST’s you just made, lay them out to make 4 units the same as above.

Step 7

Sew them together just like a 4 patch block. Sew the top 2 squares together and the bottom 2 squares together using 1/4” seam allowance and press the seams open.

Step 8

Sew the 2 rows together and press the seam open. You should have 4 of these units measuring 4.5” square.

Making the middle units

step 9

Step 1 – Take 4 of the 2.5” background fabric squares and the 4 grey print squares. Pair them up as above and sew 1/4” seam on one side.

Step 10

Press seams open. You should have 4 rectangles measuring 2.5” x 4.5”.

Putting the block together

Step 11

Lay all the completed units in position. Sew together like you would a 9 patch block.

Step 12

Sew the units together to make 3 rows. Press the seams open.

Sew the rows together and press seams. You now have completed a Farmers Daughter block!
